Officially Our Birthday
November 12th, 2016. That's the officially birthday of Space Cadets Gaming Gaming! The story of how we got here is a long one and I intend to save it for next year's 5 year anniversary. Today, I want to look at these three Pokemon cards in the graphic. Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite.
In case you're not familiar with Pokemon, one of the concepts in the game is you start with a basic Pokemon character and level them up or Evolve. These three cards are the evolution of Dratini. These cards were given to me in a bouquet of candy bars from a good friend on the day we opened our doors for the first time as a stand alone business. She was our first in store customer as well. It was somewhat ironic because at that time, we weren't doing Pokemon yet. This act of kindness stuck with me and I still have these cards today!
(For these next metaphors, you need to have a basic understanding of how to play Pokemon)
Reflecting back on the events that got us to today, I feel like these cards represent us. Space Cadets Gaming Gaming began as a basic Pokemon. It got us off the bench and onto the playing field. It required some attached energy but not a great deal. Our abilities had little impact, but they chipped away at the target little by little.
Evolve to Stage 2. More energy is required to make your abilities stronger and more effective. Now you're a little more noticeable, your attacks are more effective, others are taking notice. The cost of retreating to the bench is increased. This is where I feel we are today.
Then to Stage 3! Where that Pokemon is no longer the cute and cuddly critter you started with; it's a powerful force to be reckoned with! Sure it requires a great deal of attached energy but look at what you're accomplishing! Maybe it's massive claws, fire breathing, a crushing wave but no matter what there's no way the other Pokemon overlook you now.
Then you get into the EX and GX and V and all those new types but that goes beyond the basics of my analogy.
Ideally, as a business, we never stop evolving. Just because we reach Stage 3 by no means indicates we're through. We keep pressing, exploring new ways of evolving. Hopefully we can keep our Pokemon on the field, keep attaching energy, continue evolving and never retreat to the bench.
